News:Mythic Merges Servers at WAR

If you haven’t noticed, the MMO Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has been losing their players after barely three months of the launch of the game last September 2008 due to the release of the much-awaited third installment of the MMO giant, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (abbreviated to WoW:WotLK). As of now, figures are down to 300,000 subscribers and the servers are looking more like a desert than a world of chaos (which the game was supposed to deliver).

During the past few months, Mythic has been trying to regain their players with anything from the Night of Murder last February, the free one year subscription plan for every friend you bring to the game, and let’s not forget that awfully desperate move on the creation of two classes just after two months of the release of the game. This time however, Mythic is finally planning to merge the servers together, which also means closing down more than 60 servers and transferring players to populate the remaining servers.

This is actually very good news for the game since the main problem was the lack of population on the servers because, aside from the fact that WAR players went back to playing WoW because of the new expansion after its release, the game was basically deserted everywhere you go. Not only would this help the population problem of the game, it would want other people to join in again and give the game another shot. Hopefully it works out for Mythic this time round.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is developed by Mythic Entertainment. It was in development for 3 years, earning several awards in between including Beckett Massive Online Game Reader’s Choice Award: Most Anticipated MMO. It was released worldwide last September 18, 2008, two months before the release of WoW: WotLK. Due to the anticipation of the game and the clamor for it, Mythic resorted to creating too many servers which is now the cause of their own downfall. US President Barrack Obama’s Top 10 Games

GOD Bless America! You know, being the leader of the most awesome country in the world is no easy task. And worse still, there’s no real way to prepare properly for it. Fortunately, the world of video games offers many would-be Commanders-in-Chief the opportunity to take a test run of some of their social, economic and military strategies and see how things end up. After all, if the North Koreans drop the bomb on us, it’s a piece of cake to load up an earlier save and wipe them out before they even get the chance. The stakes are pretty high for our next President and, since there’s no option for him to reload the country if things go to crap, we thought we’d offer President Obama a list of ten games that will surely help him prepare for this next term and rehearse his responses to some of the crises he might face.

10. The Political Machine 2008

Okay, okay. He already won the election for 2008, but that’s no reason not to skip over this one. Not only does it give the Obama team a head start on preparing for the next election, but it also serves as a nice snapshot of public opinion before the most recent election. So if the team wants to know how their stance on universal health care or higher gas taxes might fly in a given state, they don’t have to call on some fancy pants Department Secretary; they can just boot up the game and see for themselves.

2009 Hottest Games

The new year is going to be an exciting one for gamers with some ground-breaking games planned to be released throughout the year. Here is a sneak preview into what I believe are the 10 hottest games to come out in the PC, XBOX and PS3 consoles.

HALO 3: Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (XBOX 360)

An obvious selection for this list, the game play of Halo 3: ODST bears a strong resemblance to previous Halo games. The difference is that the character played will be “Rookie,” a UNSC solider and not as the Master Chief. Since this ODST does not possess Master Chief”s superhuman abilities and armour, you”ll be much more vulnerable to weapons fire, thus suggesting a stealthier shooter. The main objective of the game is to lead the Rookie through the ruins of Mombasa and discover what happened to his missing teammates. The game has obviously been designed to be more tactical, driving the gamer to put more thinking into the play rather than going on a rampage and shooting stuff randomly.

Need For Speed Carbon Collector’s Edition

After rebooting the franchise with Need for Speed Underground, EA has continued to produce some solid street racers under the Need for Speed banner. Last year’s Need for Speed Most Wanted, which featured hilariously over-the-top live-action cutscenes and seriously tense police pursuits, proved to be a high watermark for the franchise. Now it’s being followed up by Need for Speed Carbon, which downplays the role of the police chases, introduces some simple team-racing mechanics, and occasionally takes the action off the city streets and into the outlying canyons. The new gameplay doesn’t always improve the experience, but the racing can still be quite intense and still has a pronounced sense of style.

Game News:Daniel Petric killed his Mom because of Halo 3 video game

ELYRIA - Daniel Petric was so angry that his father would not allow him to play the violent video game Halo 3 that he killed his mother and shot his father, then tried to make it appear to be a murder-suicide, prosecutors told a Lorain County judge this morning in the boy’s murder trial.

Games News: PSP-4000 in 2009, PSP2 later

Sony plans to refresh the PlayStation Portable product line with a PSP-4000 model in late 2009 and launch a true successor – a PSP2, if you like – later.

Publishing sources, speaking to Eurogamer, were unable to provide any further detail on next year’s update, which will presumably follow this year’s PSP-3000 in taking an iterative approach. The PSP-3000 launched this October and followed a 2000-series model, the first Slim & Lite, in September 2007.

Game News:Videogame sales shine despite economic gloom

Videogame sales were a bright spot on November’s bleak economic landscape, climbing to nearly three billion dollars, according to market research firm NPD Thursday.

US videogame sales so far in 2008 topped 16 billion dollars at the end of November and are on pace to crest 22 billion dollars for all of 2008, according to the industry tracking group.

Sales in November were 10 percent higher than the same month last year, before a financial storm slammed the economy.

“The video games industry continues to set a blistering sales pace,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier said, citing research that showed videogames were “the category consumers are least likely to cut back on this holiday.”

Videogame sales are up 31 percent for the year, driven by demand for titles such as “Gears of War 2″ and “Call of Duty: World at War,” according to NPD.

Videogames crafted for Nintendo’s coveted Wii consoles made up half the top 10 best selling titles.

Wii sales in November were more than double those of Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles and more than five times those of Sony’s PlayStation 3 systems.

Still, each of the rival videogame console makers “had something to brag about” in the robust sales figures, Frazier said.

Videogame sales are being bolstered by an industry trend of expanding the audience beyond “hardcore gamers” by designing offerings for families, girls, seniors, and others aside from young-male fans of shooter titles.

“Economic factors are also at play given that a video game is a relatively inexpensive form of entertainment for the hours of value it provides,” said Frazier.

A freshly released “Fallout 3″ videogame from Bethesda Softworks lets people immerse themselves in the roles of heroes or outlaws in a vivid post-apocalyptic Washington for scores of hours.

At a price of 60 dollars for a copy of the videogame, the cost breaks down to less than a dollar an hour for entertainment as compared with five or so dollars an hour to go to a film.

“It’s clear there can be more multiple victors this generation (of consoles),” Frazier said.

“While price is certainly a strong factor, particularly as the current economic situation continues to prevail, the most important factor that will drive success in 2009 will be the line-up of compelling games that will keep consumers involved in the industry.”
